Platte River & Great Plains

Sandhill Cranes

MARCH 19-23, 2015

On this exciting adventure we got to experience some very exciting aspects of our natural world. We witnessed hundreds of thousands of Sandhill Cranes moving north through Nebraska during their migration, as they paused along the Platte River to feed in adjacent cornfields and roost nightly on sandbars in the shallow river.

We also observed the unusual and fascinating avian mating displays of Sharp-tailed Grouse and Greater Prairie Chickens as they gathered on communal grounds where the males strutted and vocalized in an attempt to woo females. This mating behavior, known as lekking, was a real treat to see!
